God. Izvor Originalni tekst Prevod
1939. engl. The Big Sleep -
— Glava 2.
A few locks of dry white hair clung to his scalp, like wild flowers fighting for life on a bare rock.
1939. engl. The Big Sleep -
— Glava 2.
The old man nodded, as if his neck was afraid of the weight of his head.
1942 engl. The High Window -
— Glava 1.
After a while a middle-aged sourpuss in a maid's costume opened the front door about eight inches and gave me the beady eye.
1942. engl. The High Window -
— Glava 2.
She had a lot of face and chin. She had pewter-colored hair set in a ruthless permanent, a hard beak, and large moist eyes with the sympathetic expression of wet stones. Imala je krupno lice s podbratkom, srebrnasto obojenu kosu nemilosrdno nakovrčanu trajnom ondulacijom, tvrdu njušku i velike vlažne oči s prijaznim izrazom mokrog kamena.[3]
1943. engl. The Lady in the Lake -
— Glava 5.
He scowled and then put his head back and burst out laughing. The roar of his laughter was like a tractor backfiring. It blasted the woodland silence to shreds. On se namršti, zabaci glavu, a zatim iz njega prodre gromki smijeh.

objavljena u engl. Trouble Is My Business - Опасност је мој посао
— Glava 1.
There was a desert wind blowing that night. It was one of those hot dry Santa Anas that come down through the mountain passes and curl your hair and make your nerves jump and your skin itch. On nights like that every booze party ends in a fight. Meek little wives feel the edge of the carving knife and study their husbands' necks. Anything can happen. You can even get a full glass of beer at a cocktail lounge. Pokorne žene opipavaju oštricu noža i merkaju vrat svojih supruga. Svašta može da se dogodi. Čak možete dobiti punu čašu piva u pivnici.[2]
1945. engl. The Simple Art of Murder (An Essay) - Једноставна уметност убиства (есеј) All men who read escape from something else into what lies behind the printed page... All men must escape at times from the deadly rhythm of their private thoughts.
1945. engl. The Simple Art of Murder (An Essay) - Једноставна уметност убиства (есеј) The English may not always be the best writers in the world, but they are incomparably the best dull Writers.
